In this lesson, you will learn about rocks and how they change over time. This is called the rock cycle.

You will learn about three types of rocks. Igneous rocks form when hot melted rock cools and hardens. Sedimentary rocks form when small pieces of sand, mud, and rock press together in layers. Metamorphic rocks form when rocks change because of heat and pressure deep underground.

You will also learn that rocks can change from one type to another. By the end, you will be able to explain how rocks form and change in the rock cycle.

Students are expected to explain the geological processes that result in the formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and describe how these changes occur through the rock cycle (Overall Expectation E2.1).

🐝 Grade 4 Review: The Rock Cycle 🐝
🔥 Review 1: Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks form when melted rock called magma (underground) or lava (above ground) cools and hardens. This usually happens during volcanic eruptions or deep inside the Earth.

Example: Basalt and granite.
🌊 Review 2: Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks form when small pieces of rock, sand, and mud are pressed together over a long time. These layers build up near rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Example: Sandstone and limestone.
⛰️ Review 3: Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure deep underground. The rock does not melt, but it changes shape and structure.

Example: Marble and slate.
🔄 Review 4: The Rock Cycle
The rock cycle shows how rocks are always changing. Any rock can become another type of rock over time through:

• Melting and cooling • Weathering and erosion • Heat and pressure

Rocks are constantly being recycled by Earth’s processes.
