NOTE FOR THE PARENT

In Grade 4 science, students also explore First Nations, Mรฉtis, and Inuit knowledge of rocks and minerals. They learn how Indigenous communities have long understood the properties of different materials and selected them for specific purposesโ€”such as flint for tools, soapstone for carving, or minerals for art and ceremony. This perspective highlights the value of traditional knowledge and how it connects science, culture, and respect for the land.

This topic is part of the Earth and Space Systems strand in the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum.

Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of Indigenous geological knowledge and explain how different rocks and minerals are used for specific purposes (Overall Expectation E2.6).
